(GIS): – Public debt has been given the largest chunk of government’s billion dollar budget at 401.5 million dollars or 36.1% of total expenditure.
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Dr. Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell presented a budget of one billion, one hundred and twelve million, thirty-nine thousand, nine hundred and thirty eight dollar (1,112,039,938.00).
The second highest allocation went to the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development which received 112 million dollars or 10.1% of total expenditure, followed by the Ministry of Finance and Energy with 84.7 million dollars.
The Ministry of Health, Social Security and International Business received the next biggest allocation of $82.3 million, followed by the Ministry of Communications, Works, Physical Development, Public Utilities, ICT & Community Development at $61.2 million.
Dr. Mitchell says 56.4 million was allocated to Pensions and Gratuities and 50.9 million to police.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports will receive $41.8 million, while the Ministry of Social Development and Housing will get $39.7 million.
In the budget, which was presented under the theme “Safeguarding our gains and continuing our progress”, the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Planning has been allocated $35.1 million, while 25.7 million will go to the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture and 24.7 million to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
